Paranoia is an in-line hardware tape encryption unit that requires no system or software changes. Once the drive is installed and setup (something which takes very little time to do), secure, encrypted backups are done just like any other tape backup - the encryption process works transparently.
Your system is well protected against external and internal intrusion by Bsafe/Enterprise Security including access control and audit and everything else you need keep your on-line system secure. But, to ensure the data can be recovered in the event of a disaster, system malfunction or even human error data needs to be backed up and kept at a place away from the system.
Most systems use tape as the media of choice for this operation. Once written to tape however the data is completely unprotected—no access control, passwords or audit trail is involved with the data. When the backup job runs it needs access to all the data areas in order to do the job and a part of any good backup software is a security device to ensure that unauthorized users cannot use this access as a “back door” to the system.
To ensure this valuable data cannot be accessed or modified when on tape. The Paranoia2 range uses 3DES2 encryption to ensure it remains secure and confidential and that integrity is assured.
The PARANOIA2 is the second generation in the range of tape encryption units designed to allow data being written to tape to be encrypted and decrypted to DES or triple DES standard on the fly. The PARANOIA2 unit automatically takes the address of the tape drive to which it is connected and responds to the system at that ID only. Each PARANOIA2 unit has its own encryption key produced from two separate parts; the user enters their own keys using the product GUI and this is used with a customer unique internal code chip to produce the final key.
This addition to Bsafe Information Systems’ offering is a further step towards complete data security and compliance with the ever-familiar legislation and regulations of Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, the UK Data Protection Act and Basel II.
